Stephen, you found a way to get him to participate whereas previously he would just shut down. He said he had fun and that is my goal while he learns to swim! Thank you so much!!!

Our son has gained confidence with Stephen after a big set back in lessons. Stephen is engaging, gentle, but strong presence, creating a safe space to make the lessons fun

My three year old responds extremely well to Stephen’s coaching. He makes the lessons fun while also adding the essentials for water safety. My son has done lessons at pedal heads, aquaventures and with the community centre but these lessons by far out weigh our experience with swimming here in Vancouver. Stephen comes highly recommended!

About Stephen F.

I began working in aquatics in 2005 which has grown into a 20+ year career. I now manage a public pool, but miss teaching and the joy of helping students succeed. I believe pools and natural waterways are places for recreation, exploration, and connection. I’m passionate about helping people build confidence and a positive relationship with water.

Teaching philosophy

My teaching style is warm, supportive, and centered on each swimmer’s unique goals and comfort level. My 20+ years in aquatics have given me insights that help me adapt quickly to different abilities, so I can meet each client where they are and help them build confidence, safety, and stronger skills at a pace that feels right for them.

A typical first lesson

Before our first lesson, I’ll connect to talk about your goals, experience, comfort level, and any past instruction. In our first session, I’ll start with a skills check, then guide you through drills and progressions tailored to your needs. I’ll finish with a check-in to ensure that my style is aligned with your goals and discuss next steps.

Where I teach

Surrey Panorama Ridge

30-31°C · 45ft long · 3ft to 10ft deep

A hidden neighborhood retreat, this bright indoor pool feels like a mini getaway. Sunlight pours through the large panel doors along one end, lighting up the sparkling blue water while giving swimmers a fun peek at the outdoors. The pool's gentle stair entry is perfect for toddlers easing into the water, and the gradual depth and long length allow everyone from beginners to confident swimmers to practice at their own pace. Just steps away, a newly renovated restroom, shower, and changing room make getting ready easy for parents juggling towels and goggles. Warm lighting, fresh facilities, and a welcoming atmosphere come together to create a safe, cheerful space where families and individuals can build skills, confidence, and happy memories in the water.

Pool access details are provided after you book.
