Hi! I’m Jess, a swim instructor with over 10 years of experience. *I have speciality in teaching adults who are new to swimming or struggling with confidence in the water, but I accept swimmers of all levels, and abilities.* About my students: I am best known for teaching new swimmers - whether it be kiddos who are progressing through standard Red Cross or Lifesaving Society levels, or adults who are just getting comfortable in the water for the first time. Over the last 2 years, I have developed a special passion for teaching adults who are new to swimming or looking to advance their skills. I have supported students who have experienced significant water-related trauma and always take a trauma informed approach to lessons. Wherever you are in your swim journey, I will meet you there! What you can expect from my lessons: 1. personalized lessons with your goals in mind - I am committed to always creating personalized lessons based on the comfort level and progress goals of my students. I regularly discuss goals and progress with my students (or their parents) to ensure lessons are structured towards success! 2. Dimensional learning - I seek always to help my students understand the “why” behind our lessons, encouraging students to understand not only mechanics of swimming but also to get in touch with how our bodies work in the water. My students know not only “what to do” in the water but also “why it works”. This includes discussions of safe water practices. 3. Flexibility - Every body is different, and I always provide modifications and personalized instruction to meet the needs of each student. 4. Progression based learning - swimming is a progression based skill! In my classes I focus on a stepped approach to make sure we have build the strength and confidence to add further challenge with new strokes and skills! 5. Inclusive instruction - I welcome all students, regardless of experience level, identity, or size. Swimming is for everyone! 6. Fun! I do this because I love it, I want you to love it to! More about me: I have held National Lifeguard Certification since 2012 and have experience with both the redcross swim levels and lifesaving society programs. I have experience at recreational pool facilities as well as in open water and can speak to safety in both settings. I currently work in health and mental health care - but just couldn’t give up swim instructing entirely! I hold two masters degrees, one in social work, and the other in philosophy.
