Teaching with the City of Markham

The City of Markham runs its own aquatic operation end to end. It owns and staffs all ten of its pools, eight indoor and two outdoor, with no contracted operator and no nonprofit partner anywhere in the chain, and it states that its pools run seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. That has two consequences for you. The work is genuinely year-round rather than a summer season, and everything about how you get hired, trained, scheduled, and paid comes from one employer with one published process. That process is unusually legible: Markham prints its hiring calendar, its certification pathway, and its rates where you can read them, which is more than most municipalities do.

The application process

Markham publishes a full four-season hiring calendar, which almost no municipality does, and it is the single most useful thing on the City's careers page. Spring roles post from January to late February and train in March for a season starting the last week of March. Summer posts March to May, interviews close in May, offers go out in May, and training runs in June for a July start. Fall posts June to September and trains in August or the first two weeks of September. Winter posts September to December and trains in December for a January start. Interviews and offers run monthly for Spring, Fall, and Winter, so the posting window is rolling rather than a single deadline. Applications go through the City's ADP career centre. The City states the reason for the seasonal structure directly: postings are timed "to ensure new applicants are on board to meet training deadlines prior to beginning work." Read the calendar back and the practical answer is that your first shift is roughly one to three months out, and the binding constraint is the training block, not the interview. Apply for the intake whose training date you can actually attend.

Building seniority

This is where Markham differs from most municipal paths, and it is worth understanding before you invest years in it. Front-line aquatic staff in Markham are not in a bargaining unit. CUPE Local 905 holds two City of Markham units, Inside and Outside workers, both running to March 2027, but their recognition clauses exclude temporary employees and people regularly employed for not more than 24 hours a week, and the City advertises a 24-hour part-time cap on its own recreation jobs page, with some positions going to 35. Aquatic roles are posted as temporary part-time. The result is that there is no aquatic wage grid, no step structure, and no seniority-based progression published for these roles. Pay is a single flat number per classification: $17.60/hr at Aquatics Assistant, $21.10/hr at Aquatics Instructor, $22.60/hr at Adapted Aquatics Instructor. You do not move up inside a classification by accumulating seasons. You move by qualifying into a different one.

Long-term career opportunities

There is a real ladder, and it is a ladder of classifications rather than steps. Above the instructor rate sit the Aquatic Leadership Conductor tiers, posted at $30.10/hr at Swim Specialist 1 and $37.10/hr at Swim Specialist 3, which ask for a deeper award stack including Airway Management and National Lifeguard Instructor. Above that the path leaves the deck: the City's Aquatics Sport Development Supervisor is a full-time salaried role posted at $83,093 to $104,793 a year, holding National Lifeguard, Intermediate First Aid, Airway Management, Aquatic Supervisor, and the Swim and Lifesaving Instructor award, and overseeing the part-time complement at the Markham Pan Am Centre along with the Lifesaving Club of Markham. The pay at the top is genuine. Getting there means stacking four to six Lifesaving Society awards and moving into supervision, scheduling, and compliance work rather than teaching. Teaching with the Markham Health & Fitness YMCA

The YMCA of Greater Toronto runs the Markham Health & Fitness YMCA, and it is the only other named nonprofit pool operator found in the city. It is also the reason Markham's wage picture is worth reading carefully rather than assuming. In most cities the municipality anchors the local rate and everyone else works around it. In Markham the Y's posted swim instructor rate sits above the City's, and its posted lifeguard rate sits level with the City's instructor rate. If you are choosing between the two on pay alone, the answer here is not the one you would expect.

The application process

The Y posts a single combined "Lifeguard & Swim Instructor" requisition with both rates attached rather than advertising two separate jobs, and hires branch by branch as openings come up rather than on a published seasonal calendar. That is the practical difference from the City: there is no window to wait for, but there is also no calendar telling you when the next one opens. Watch the branch's postings directly. The most recent Markham posting reviewed for this page listed roughly $21 to $23.50/hr across the two roles and carried an application deadline in late August 2026 (as of 2026-08-31), so treat any rate you read here as a figure to confirm against the live posting rather than a standing rate.

What the work looks like

Because the requisition combines guarding and teaching, expect to do both, and expect the schedule to be built around when lessons and public swims actually run: early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Shifts are assigned by the branch rather than chosen, so the hours you work are the hours the programme schedule needs.

Long-term career opportunities

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a large association with branches across the region, so there is a genuine internal ladder into aquatic supervision and branch management, and the Y is known for promoting from within. Specific Markham-branch supervisory postings and their pay were not published at the time this page was researched, so the honest answer is that the ladder exists and its rungs are not publicly priced. Both pages were live and saying different things on 2026-08-31, so whether you can be hired to teach on the instructor award alone is a fair question to ask the City directly. Do you need National Lifeguard to teach swimming in Markham?+

For the City of Markham, the honest answer is that the City's own website gives two answers, and you should ask before you spend the money. Its Aquatic Leadership Programs page phrases the step-3 requirement as "Instructors: Swim and Lifesaving and/or National Lifeguard," which reads as either award being enough. Its Recreation Jobs page lists Instructors: Swim and Lifesaving, National Lifeguard, and Airway Management as a set you complete before becoming a lifeguard and swim instructor. Elsewhere the answer is cleaner: teaching and guarding are separate qualifications, and to teach private lessons on Propel you need the swim instructor award, not National Lifeguard.
